Around Taiwan in Six Days

This could also be named: Every Type of Bad Weather in Taiwan in Six Days

We actually did it! Every county in Taiwan by motorcycle starting from Koahsiung to Kenting, across the mountains to the East coast up the the very most northern part and down the West coast going slightly East and back to the West to arrive back to Kaohsiung on the most thrilling experience of a lifetime.

Day 1: Koahsiung to Taitung.

The weather was wonderful. We went on the beach in sleeveless shirts getting red faces in the sun. We arrived in Taitung in the early afternoon, checked into the hotel and spent the rest of the day exploring.

Day 2: Taitung to Haulien

Leaving at 7am the weather was terrible. Gale force winds and constant rain made the journey a little uncomfortable, but we still took in the sights and made the best of it. We arrived in Hualien in the early afternoon and spent some time to look around.

Day 3: Hualien

We had previously decided to spend two nights in one place and Hualien was the choice. We walked from one end of the city to the other. We also took a walk around the outskirts along the originally named Hualien River.

The people of Hualien seemed to be quite friendly, but also a little shy around us.

Day 4: Hualien to Keelung

We had originally planned to spend the afternoon in Ilan, but the weather was again aweful, and the route is mainly mountain roads which wind around the sides of the mountains, one bend looking much like another, so we passed Ilan by and continued on to Keelung arriving in the early afternoon.

After checking into a hotel we set out to explore the city. It seemed to be one big market with stalls lining every street. The rain continued throughout the night, but by now we had grown quite used to it.

Day 5: Keelung to Taichung

We left at 7am and it was cold, wet and windy....during the day it worse to the point that I could not feel my fingers and visibility was very limited. We had to go through Taipei which was achieved quite smoothly and down to Hsinchu.

We had to make a choice.....continue to Taichung or give up and stay in Hsinchu......We decided to continue and we arrived in Taichung mid-afternoon.

The weather was still bad, but the rain had given up for a while.

After finding a hotel, we set out to explore the city. It was Chinese New Years Eve and pretty much everything was closed down. We wandered around this ghost town and found a friendly, but very local, tavern.

Day 6: Taiching to Kaohsiung

We set out at 9:30am and the weather got much better the further South we went. We took a slight detour to the East to take in Nantou County and then back to the West to head South. By Chaiyi we could take off our rain suits and continue the trip in warmer climates.

We arrived back in Kaohsiung at 4pm and I slept for 18 hours off and on until the next morning.

Even though the weather was against us and some of the roads were so dangerous, I would not have swapped this trip for anything....Thomas was there all the way...a real trouper...and we made the best of the journey taking in parts of Taiwan we had never been before....It reminded us both of how much we love this country, especially Koahsiung!

Our biggest achievement was traveling through every county in Taiwan! However, I would like to take the journey again in better weather and I would like to spend about 12 days on it next time so that we can stay in more cities.

Christmas in Thailand or What no beer?

It has been a while since I added to my blog and this is long overdue.

As anyone knows who reads my blog, Thomas and I have been traveling all over Taiwan by motorcycle and we will continue to do so, but we decided it was time to venture overseas to Thailand for Christmas on a long awaited and deserved vacation for a few days.

I have been to Bangkok many times, but this was Thomas's first visit.

Day 1: 22nd December 2007

Flight left at 10:25 and we arrived in sunny Bangkok at 3pm in the afternoon their time. It took forever to get through passport control. It seems that they were on a go slow. The lines got longer and longer, so to compensate for this they removed some of the customs officers from the desks to make things worse.

After a long trip through the traffic jams in the van that was waiting for us we arrived at the Holiday Inn Salom which is near the main hustle and bustle of the city. Niether of us has a credit card, so we were asked to pay 12,000 Baat as a deposit....luckily I had NT$12,000 on me and they accepted that.

We settle in and head on out into the city for some sightseeing. It was hot and sticky, so when the evening arrived I thought I would introduce Thomas to a few bars. We sit down and try to order. "Go away" we are told in no uncertain terms at the first bar. Then the second....then the third, fourth, fifth.....'What on earth is going on' we asked ourselves. All the bars were open, but nobody would serve us a drink. Then we found the answer....a notice at the end of the street said in Thai and English that becuase of the general election alcohol cannot be served for 48 hours.

Only we could arrive in a country that has prohibition during the Christmas period.

We did find a bar that would serve us drinks though :-)

Day 2: 23rd December 2007

We decided to walk North up along the river. It was awesome! We saw some very local areas and finally arrived at the Emerald Palace. After that we went further North and hired a long boat whichg had a truck engine to power it. 3,000 baat got us the boat for four hours with the destination of a snake farm at the end of it. The pilot (driver) seemed that he wanted to be a power boat driver and he took every boat he saw...it was great!

We took a boat bus back to Salom.

In the evening we headed out to the Patpong market for a little shopping.

Day 3: 24th December 2007

This was Skytrain day. We had a day ticket given to us as part of our package, so we headed to the end of the line on the Skytrain. It was quite funny, everyone was wearing yellow shirts! Turned out that every Monday is the King's birthday and people wear yellow out of respect for that.

After visiting the end of the line we chose to stop at every station and see what was there.....it was a great way to see the city!

Christmas eve was interesting. We put on our santa hats and flashing christmas tree badges and headed out. Everyone was looking and smiling...greeting us Merry Christmas. We got to the bar area...yes, beer was legal again! It started a trend.....bar staff disappeared and came back with santa hats for the staff, some of them came back with red and white christmas dresses....it was a great night and we had a lot of fun!

Day 4: 25th December 2007

Christmas Day different to any other I have had.....breakfast in the hotel and out for a final look around...we checked out of the hotel and got in a PINK taxi back to the airport. Our plane was at 1:30pm their time.

I have to admit...the new Bangkok airport is awesome and it is not difficult to spend 2 hours in it.

All in all we had a great time there and it the start of a new adventure for us....we will continue to travel around Taiwan, but now we will also take in an annual overseas trip. Osaka is the next destination.

Take a look at the photos....they say a picture speaks a thousand words....there are 847,000 words for you :-)

Happy New Year!

A Funny Thing Happened...

Thomas and I were just walking down Jungshan Road when we noticed a new musical instrument store. Not being able to resist looking to see if they have a Fender Telecaster for sale I went towards the window to take a look. We were ushered into the store by the owner who had explained that it was just open. I picked up an acoustic guitar and started to play, then was joined by another guy playing guitar for a small improvised blues jam, then he asked if I would like to play on the stage outside the store. He was asking the wrong person! I said OK...point the way. The acoustic was exchanged for a fendor strat which was slightly out of tune, but I could not change that as there were locking nuts on the strings and went on to perform "Cheating Girl Blues' live and solo to an audience of musicians. I finished playing and got a round of applause. Thomas said it sounded awesome....Then we just wandered off to get a coffee. Only in Taiwan!

Have fun!

Kaohsiung to Taipei to Kaohsiung Road trip!

Just imagine riding a motorcycle through Tainan, Chaiyi, Chunghua, Taichung, Hsinchu, and Taipei in one day! Well, that's exactly what we did!

Day 1: Leave from Jungshan Road , Kaohsiung, in the afternoon and out on route 1. Go through Tainan, Chaiyi, Chunghua, and Taichung.....Arrive in Hsinchu at 9:30pm. Find a hotel and spend the night.

Day 2: Head out of Hsinchu towards Touyan...arrive at Taipei at 12:00pm. Find a hotel and be a tourist for the day!

Day 3: Up at 6am and out to the 101 in Taipei. Head out of Taipei and head towards Kaohsiung.

OK, so a few things happened on our trip. My ipod gave up before the journey back. I think I will get two tickets in the post for speeding. And we both got really saddle sore and suffered for several hours on the journey back.

However, it was a once in a lifetime thing, and who could pass up on this fantastic journey? Certainly not us.

I know this entry is short, but just take a good look at the photos and you will get a much better idea of our amazing three days!

The music is a David Bowie song called 'Heroes' - performed by Mike B (That's me) which is a perfect track for this occasion!

(P.S. The red line on the map shows this road trip. The orange line is previous road trips)

New Motorcycle, New Apartment, New Life!

Life is all go in this land of Kaohsiung. I saved enough money to buy a new motorcycle and I am happy with it....Kenting to kaohsiung in 1 hour 43 minutes

Then I find out the day after my birthday that the landlord of my apartment has not been paying the mortgage and I have to move because the bank is going to repossess it. So today I went on a house hunt and found an awesome place with wooden floors, fancy ceilings and a Japanese style room which is perfect for the music studio.

I move in on the 6th April. I will take some photos and post them on my blog as soon as the ADSL is connected there :-)

Chinese New Year - Kaohsiung to Nantou

Happy Chinese New Year! May this year of the pig bring you health, wealth and happiness!

For Thomas and I Chinese New Year is quite a drag just hanging around in the city when almost all the stores and restaurants are closed, so we decided to travel to Nantou by motorcycle for another road trip.

We set off at 8am on Saturday 17th February for our exciting new adventure which took us North up the 17, across to route 3 at Chaiyi and then several smaller roads to Nantou. We visited several places including; Sun Moon lake, The Abororiginal Village, and Jiji, just to name a few.

We came back via the coastal roads heading West from Nantou until we hit the ocean, then turning left to head back to Kaohsiung via route 17.

We documented this awesome journey through photos which are now in the photo gallery...enjoy and please don't forget to leave your comments.
